The Caribbean mangroves: An Eocene innovation with no Cretaceous precursors

چکیده

The mangrove communities of the Caribbean region are considered descendants former pantropical Late-Cretaceous mangroves that underwent regional differentiation after tectonic closure Tethys Sea. southern area has been cradle Neotropical mangroves. These inferences were based mainly on qualitative evidence, such as presence/absence fossils showing botanical affinities with present-day taxa. However, demonstrated in Quaternary paleoecology, most suitable approach for reconstructing past plant is assemblage approach, which quantitative palynology. Therefore, problem origin mangroves, ecological communities, addressed here by reviewing detail Late Cretaceous to Eocene palynological studies available properly reconstruct assemblages. No evidence found occurrence ecosystems during and Paleocene, only records fossil representatives some individual taxa (Nypa, Acrostichum), not mangrove-forming elements and, hence, reliable indicators communities. first robust true was Middle (Lutetian). dominated representative Pelliciera, a tree distribution time. Back-mangrove palm Nypa (which time but now restricted Indo-Malayan region), fern Acrostichum palms, notably Mauritia, along sea-land saline freshwater community gradient. Pelliciera originated Early became dominant Eocene, when it dispersed across area, probably favored migration plate. evolutionary innovations emerged de novo rather than consequence from hypothetical Tethyan whose existence supported records. It proposed develop this type study other tropical/subtropical sounder view evolution, at global scale.

Mangroves Enhance Reef Fish Abundance at the Caribbean Regional Scale

Several studies conducted at the scale of islands, or small sections of continental coastlines, have suggested that mangrove habitats serve to enhance fish abundances on coral reefs, mainly by providing nursery grounds for several ontogenetically-migrating species. However, evidence of such enhancement at a regional scale has not been reported, and recently, some researchers have questioned the...

Value of Coral Reefs & Mangroves in the Caribbean

This document contains a methodology for assessing economic value of three goods and services provided by coral reef ecosystems in the Caribbean. The paper begins with a background on the importance of coral reefs and ecosystem goods and services, and provides a brief overview of economic valuation methods. Next, we present our current approach for valuing three important coral-reef associated ...

Proximal cretaceous-tertiary boundary impact deposits in the Caribbean.

Trace element, isotopic, and mineralogic studies indicate that the proposed impact at the Cretaceous-Tertiary (K-T) boundary occurred in an ocean basin, although a minor component of continental material is required. The size and abundance of shocked minerals and the restricted geographic occurrence of the ejecta layer and impact-wave deposits suggest an impact between the Americas. Coarse boun...

Mangroves on the Edge: Anthrome-Dependent Fragmentation Influences Ecological Condition (Turbo, Colombia, Southern Caribbean)

Marine protected areas are commonly seen as the most effective strategy for protecting mangroves from external human pressures but little is known about the role of public land-tenure contexts (dense settlements, agricultural or range lands and wild anthromes) on clearing rates, patch properties, and ecological condition. We addressed the following questions using a peri-urban to wild gradient ...
